International Ministry
During its earliest decades, the Baptist Union of Sweden (BUS) gave some support to missionary work in Burma. Later, this became better organized and coordinated, and work was supported in Finland, Estonia and Spain. In 1881, a special committee was set up with responsibility for mission in countnries such as China and the Belgian Congo. The first Swedish Baptist to go to Congo, E.V Sjöblom, became heavily involved in the protests against what was called "the Congo atrocities", the abuses against the native population under the Leopoldian regime. In the same country, later known as Zaire and now the Congo again, the BUS had its largest mission up to the 1980s, in terms of both funding and personell. Today, Thailand is the BUS's largest mission area. |
